Candidates for Artist Selection Committee

The Calgary Public Library is looking to form an Artist Selection Committee to support the Indigenous Placemaking Program Coordinator in commissioning artwork and arts related installations that will activate Indigenous Placemaking at the Calgary Public Library.  

The Artist Selection Committee will be comprised of up to eight (8) members who reside in the greater Calgary region. The Library is seeking responses from interested candidates (including Elders) from the TsuuT’ina Nation, the Blackfoot Nations, Stoney-Nakoda Nation, Métis Nation Region 3, Urban Indigenous communities and arts/culture professionals. We will also be encouraging members of our Elders’ Guidance Circle to be on the Selection Committee. To ensure that the Placemaking initiative is an inclusive and supportive opportunity for all Indigenous artists, this Call is particularly seeking people from traditionally under-represented and/or marginalized groups, specifically Female, individuals self-identifying as a Woman, LGBTQ2+, and non-binary community members, to ensure diverse community representation on the Artist Selection Committee.  

Prospective committee members should demonstrate experience and knowledge in at least one of following categories:  

  • Architecture; 

  • Contemporary Art; 

  • Curation; 

  • An understanding of history and /or / cultural knowledge pertaining to the TsuuT’ina Nation, the Blackfoot Nations, Stoney Nakoda Nations, and Métis Nation Region 3  

Additionally, the Committee will include members of Library staff and the Indigenous Placemaking Program Coordinator who will guide this process.  

Project Goals
With the aid of the Artist Selection Committee, the Library is seeking to procure new artwork for designated spaces throughout the Calgary Public Library to meet the following goals: 

  • Develop artworks that will promote an educational understanding of the TsuuT’ina Nation, the Blackfoot Nations, Stoney Nakoda Nations, and Métis Nation Region 3’s history, both past, present, and future using visual and oral storytelling;

  • Create a safe and inclusive place for all Indigenous people within Treaty 7 area, including under-represented and/or marginalized groups, to gather, share and learn together and to encourage education and communication about indigenous arts and culture;

  • Promote traditional and contemporary education and cultural connection amongst artists of all disciplines, backgrounds and stages of careers.

  • Promote collaboration amongst artists of all disciplines, backgrounds and stages of careers.  

Committee ResponsibilitiesThe Indigenous majority committee will review submissions for the Art Call from all artists’ applications and be tasked to make a collaborative decision on the selection of Artist(s) / Artist Teams, as well as designated placement of art installations in select Library locations. The final decision by the Calgary Public Library regarding the artist selection should reflect the recommendations made by the Artist Selection Committee.  

Compensation
An honorarium will be provided to compensate Committee members for their time, based on the current CARFAC fee structure.  

Timeline
Committee members are expected to participate in a day-long session (four hours) and subsequent email coordination as required to reach consensus on the selections. In light of COVID-19 public health restrictions and guidelines, the day-long session will be held virtually using Microsoft Teams or Zoom. A proposed date for this session is October 12, 2020, from 2:00 to 6:00 p.m., with final confirmation and coordination of meeting date and details to be determined among selection committee members.  If a consensus is not made in those four hours, a follow-up virtual meeting will be organized.
