Call for Submissions (MNG)

"The Aawaatkamooksi Peer Mentorship program at the Lodgepole Centre aims to provide support, training, and community to the Indigenous students at AUarts. We do this by hosting workshops that vary from career skills to cultural knowledge, by providing access to Elders in the community, and by creating opportunities that build students up through mentorship and community.

The upcoming exhibition at the Marion Nicoll Gallery will give students the opportunity to learn about what goes into organizing an exhibition, the curating process, installation of artwork, event planning, and collaboration. Beginning after the submission deadline on December 12, 2022, the chosen artists will engage in meetings with the directors/curators and will work together to decide themes, plan two events for the duration of the show, and will be active in installing their own work and others work while activating the space. This will give the artists insight into how exhibitions come together, empowering them with skills and knowledge for future career opportunities. They will learn to collaborate with other artists, curators, and creative directors, acquiring relational skills they can take with them into other projects.

Requirements of the submissions will be available in the form through the QR code on the poster. Although artists will collaborate on the themes within the exhibition, the overall theme of the space will be that of a winter lodge, used by communities during the colder months to gather, enjoy the harvest, and tell stories. Please include proposals that relate to the concepts of storytelling and community.

Directors, curators, and artists will be paid a fee that is dependent on the number of participating artists. The grant from the MNG will be put towards fees for directors, curators, and artists, and will be used for costs associated with planning, installing, and advertising the exhibition. An AFA grant of $2500 will be applied for to help with the costs of the exhibition.
