Collaborative Research to Reduce Patient Anxiety

The AuArts and the University of Calgary department of Surgery and Family medicine are collaborating in multidisciplinary project to help reduce patients hospital anxiety.

Through the first phase of the study, the AUArts talented community will review hospital images of patients undergoing knee replacement surgery, and will be requested to evaluate these images according to the design elements and principles and their individual artistic visions.

  • Two student Volunteers are required to help conduct the study.

  • Phase One is looking for students to review hospital images of patients undergoing knee replacement surgery.

Afterwards, the Second Phase of the study will include future patients only, to assess the influence of the selected images on reducing their hospital anxiety

The project has passed all the regulatory and ethical reviews by the Research Ethics Board at the University of Calgary; a small percentage of the images might show surgical wound, sight of blood or surgical instruments, students are encouraged if they find this kind of images uncomfortable not to enroll in the study.

The research participation is voluntary, anonymous and carries no effects toward any course grade or evaluation. Although this will be a chance to apply the artistic knowledge and skills toward helping future patients and exploring the reduction in their anxietyโ€
