Window Murals - AUArts Students

Call for 2D Artists

Calling all artists at AUA for a paid opportunity.

Join us on a fast, experimental adventure! The Chinook Blast Interpretive Artwalk Initiative is a city wide collaboration of almost 100 partners each adding some vibrancy to our downtown core February 2021.

Overview

The University of Calgary and the Alberta University of the Arts have come together to introduce Calgarians to the work of UCalgary Faculty of Science researchers through the two-dimensional artwork of AUA students. This ‘knowledge translation’ project consists of approximately 20 artistic representations of scientific research installed on the windows of multiple high profile locations around Calgary’s downtown core as part Chinook Blast during February 2021.

We are looking for AUA students to jump on board to be a part of the experience and experiment of translating these research projects into visual art.

What is the Process?

Each AUA artist will be paired with a UCalgary researcher. The relationship will begin with the researcher explaining their work before the artist develops an artistic concept to convey that research to the public through the installation. The researcher will be available to the artist throughout the process. The installation should be in the artists preferred style and how they convey the research – exacting, conceptual, etc. – will be up to them. The installation will be temporary and applied directly to the glass of assigned location. Window locations and sizes will vary (average 8’x 8’), and organizers will work with the artist to find the ideal fit.

The artist will be responsible for development, installation and supplies needed for their piece. All logistical details will be coordinated on the artist’s behalf. You create the magic, we’ll provide the space.

What qualifications do you require?

Artists need to have the energy, availability and capacity to move quickly. Strong organizational and communication skills are assets. Artists will also need to be familiar or familiarize themselves with media applications for a window installation (water based paint, vinyl/decal, etc) and removal.
