About Nike Art Gallery
Nike Art Gallery is an art gallery in Lagos owned by Nike Davies-Okundaye. The gallery is one of the largest of its kind in West Africa. With locations in Lagos, Abuja, Kogi and Osun, housed in a five-storey tall building, it hosts a large collection of diverse artworks from well-known Nigerian artists.
Nike Davies gallery attracts visitors from around the globe, she is a world-renowned batik and Adire textile designer and artist. An integral figure in African art she has been featured in prestigious art and fashion magazines, CNN International's "African Voices" and recently Netflix’s documentary ‘Stories of a Generation - with Pope Francis’ along with paintings that are permanently featured at The Smithsonian Museum. With career spanning over five decades and a multitude of exhibits she is one of West Africa’s most prominent batik artists. Nike is famous not just as an artist but as a teacher, Nike Art Gallery provides workshops on traditional Nigerian art to audiences around the world. The Gallery is dedicated to preserving African arts and culture and providing opportunities to immerging and experienced artists alike.
About Afrikadey! Arts & Culture
The Afrikadey! Arts & Culture Society was formed in 1990 by artistic director Tunde Dawodu. Throughout the years, the society has explored ways to share the rich creative works of African cultures – from the continent and throughout the Diaspora – with Canadians of all ages and from all walks of life. As a Pan African organization Afrikadey! Stives to educate, enlighten and entertain through the arts and has a long history in the arts and has established a presence not just in Western Canada but world-wide. Over the years Afrikadey! Arts &n Culture has collaborated with many organizations and this year we are pleased to announce the collaboration with Nike Art Gallery to offer this residency.
Nike Arts Residency 2022
This specific residency seeks to create space for sculptors, painters, and textile artists from Canada to develop his/her own artistic crafts. Whether you are an emerging artist or a professional in your field the residency is an opportunity to create a new project or to continue work on something in development by shifting its perspective.
The Open call is for Canadian Artists with emphasis on Black, First Nations and Afro-indigenous Artists.
Participants will interact, collaborate with Nigerian artists and create new works that will be exhibited by the end of the residency period. Residents will be provided accommodation, transportation and some meals. Residents will be responsible for their own return airfare from Canada to Nigeria, and any additional costs outside the scope of the program.
It is recommended artists apply for residency funding for further financial support, participants will also be responsible for applying for a visa.
During the residency, the artist will explore traditional Nigerian art, history and culture.
