About Us:

49 Design is the largest Indigenous design business in North America. Based in Calgary, Alberta, we specialize in a broad range of crafts and designs that pay homage to Native American and First Nations cultures. Our product offerings include fabric, craft supplies, apparel, and home goods—all featuring Indigenous designs.

Position: Designer

Location:

Calgary, Alberta, Canada (Hybrid options available)

Type:

Full-Time Seasonal (this is a 90 day position to start that may turn into a permanent full-time position)

Responsibilities:

Develop and create Indigenous designs for various products; fabric, apparel, home goods, etc.
Work closely with our social media and virtual team to produce visually compelling assets for social media and websites.
Conduct research to ensure the cultural accuracy and respectfulness of designs
Assist in design-related decisions in all aspects of design
Be involved in product development from conceptualization to implementation
Reports to the Business Manager (head of design)
Qualifications:

Advanced proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.). The right candidate should have a specialty area in Photoshop or Illustrator and be able to demonstrate that skill in their portfolio.
Extensive knowledge of Indigenous culture and design is a must
Bachelor’s degree preferred, but certification with experience accepted in lieu
Strong portfolio demonstrating Indigenous design skills, tradish and/or contemporary.
Excellent communication skills
Collaborative team player
Attention to detail
Deadly understanding of colour theory and visual design principles.
You're obsessed with Indigenous fashion and social media trends.
