MNG: Summer Camp Residency

We are excited to announce the start of Summer Camp Art Residency for BIPOC Alberta University of the Arts students and alumni. Through this residency, we're seeking to create a supportive and brave environment for emerging artists of colour to develop their art practices.

Throughout the residency, the Marion Nicoll Gallery will transform into a creative hub with a cumulative exhibition planned for September 2022.

Guest mentor is our Hear/d Residency’s Rocio Graham with special guest Jessica Mcmann whom will introduce our artists to the world of public art!

The residents will be visited by two speakers:

Jared Tailfeathers
Jared Tailfeathers - Sikomh Kokomii (Calling Crane) is a biracial Blackfoot (Nitstitapi) and Caucasian, multidisciplinary artist, musician/sound artist (music teacher), Blackfoot/Treaty 7 art researcher/amateur historian, author and inventor. He works in various media, arts and culture groups, collectives, committees and galleries. His work is often narrative based, DIY, multimedia, with hints of traditional methods of making and interactive installations.

Cheryl Foggo
Cheryl Foggo is a multiple award winning playwright, author and filmmaker, whose work over the last 30 years has focused on the lives of Western Canadians of African descent. Recent works include the release of her NFB feature documentary John Ware Reclaimed, available on nfb.ca, as well as the 30th anniversary edition of her book Pourin’ Down Rain: A Black Woman Claims Her Place in the Canadian West. Recent journalism can be found on CBC Black on the Prairies and in Westword Magazine. In 2022 her play Heaven was produced at Lunchbox Theatre in Calgary, and a production of her play John Ware Reclaimed is scheduled for a September production at the Blyth Festival. She recently wrapped shooting of a short film in northern Saskatchewan, scheduled to premiere in 2023. Cheryl is the recipient of the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta Outstanding Artist Award, The Doug and Lois Mitchell Outstanding Calgary Artist Award and the Arts, Media and Entertainment Award from the Calgary Black Chambers, all in 2021. She is a 2022 inductee into the Alberta Order of Excellence.
