JOIN THE IFWC 2024 TEAM AS A WINTER FESTIVAL ADAPTATION RESILIENCE ASSISTANT

The International Festival of Winter Cinema has partnered with the University of Alberta Sustainability Council to offer this interdisciplinary, hands on experience.

Position Description:
The successful candidate will support IFWC 2024 planning while conducting a research project examining and proposing best practices for winter festivals, including the International Festival of Winter Cinema (IFWC), to remain resilient to the changing climate.
The successful candidate will present their findings and provide recommendations as part of their work to support IFWC 2024 operations and programming. The successful candidate will work with the Festival Producer, artists, board, and volunteers to complete the following tasks:
Developing a climate resilience plan and best practices, including topics such as physical theatre design, as well as personnel and fiscal resilience. They will be expected to do academic and professional research into approaches by other winter festivals in Edmonton, elsewhere in Alberta, in other parts of Canada and around the world with similar current or future climates. Student will also examine climate data to project what adaptation tools and risk approaches that will be needed for future festivals and by which year.
Apply new and existing adaptation practices to implement the Plan in preparation and during IFWC 2024, applying aspects to operations, programming, development, marketing, and communication.
Document their activities so that the current organization and future organizers can learn from and build on their recommendations, including background, scope, method, analysis, results, recommendations, and implementation.
Present their findings as part of IFWC 2024 in conjunction with a screening of films about climate change's effect on winter. Organizers of other Edmonton winter festivals will be invited to contribute to the project and attend the presentation.
The successful candidate will gain additional professional experience by devoting part of their time to some administrative aspects of organizing the IFWC, including programming and operating the festival. Expected learned skills will include project management, research, written communication, oral communication, arts and organizational management, graphic design, and fundraising.

Qualifications:
To be eligible for the position, applicants must be either:
A current student, in either an Undergraduate or Graduate program, at an accredited post-secondary institution in Alberta*, OR;
A recent graduate of an accredited post-secondary institution in Alberta (recent defined as since May 1, 2020)

Skills and experience that will lead to success:
Written and oral communication with some basic physical and graphic design experience.
First aid.
A valid, non-graduated Class 5 or above Driver's License with fewer than 3 moving violations and less than 6 demerits on a three year abstract is an asset.
Suggested study areas: Civil/Electrical Engineering, Sport & Recreation, Film & Media, Business, Public Administration, City Planning, Regional Development.

This position is offered as part of the Adaptation Resilience Training (ART) Program. This position is eligible for co-op. Applicants may only apply for up to 3 ART program projects in 2023. Successful candidates for ART program positions will work full-time (35 hours per week) for 8 months starting in September 2023. They will be employees of the University of Alberta, but will work with and report to IFWC. This project is hosted by the International Festival of Winter Cinema Society.
