Post Content: The Narwhal is excited to offer a new art and design fellowship for early to mid-career illustrators and/or designers who are Black, Indigenous or people of colour. Our team has been recognized for its ability to make complex challenges into understandable and beautiful stories. We’d like to dive deeper and bring new visual ideas to life that support our written storytelling. We know that the design industry is err … not known for its diversity. This art and design fellowship was conceived to help change that a little.

About the fellowship

Location: Anywhere in Canada. Remote or in-person option available, depending on your location. The Narwhal has offices in Vancouver, Toronto and Victoria. Hours: Flexible, three to four days a week (22.5 - 30 hrs/wk) Salary: $3,000 to $4,000 per month depending on agreed work hours. This is equivalent to a full-time salary of $60,000 per year. Type: 3-month fixed term contract Deadline: June 30, 2024 (11:59pm PT) Start date: Sept 3, 2024 This fellowship offers one person mentorship and the opportunity to produce art and design for The Narwhal. The fellow will work directly with Shawn Parkinson, our creative director, to gain experience in art/editorial planning and production and feature layout and design. They will also have the opportunity to collaborate with Karan Saxena, our audience engagement editor, on design work tailored to different platforms. The fellowship also provides the recipient the opportunity to pitch and produce a unique visual journalism project that aims to do what The Narwhal does best: express our complex relationships with the natural world. This project could be done by the fellow on their own or in collaboration with one of our reporters, once the plan is approved by an editor. The fellow will receive a salary equivalent to $60,000 per year, adjusted according to their agreed working week. The recipient will work closely with our creative director, and they will have opportunities to collaborate with other members of our team across the country. The fellow will also, if needed, be provided access to equipment and software required to support their work.

Who should apply?

We’d love to hear from designers, illustrators, journalists or data journalists who are Black, Indigenous or people of colour and would like to use their unique talents to bring stories about the natural world to life visually. Applicants could be early to mid-career or looking to augment their trajectory toward visual design. Applicants must be based in Canada and should be available to work with us ideally four days a week from September through November 2024. So who are we looking for? Maybe you’re an illustrator or designer interested in bringing your talents to journalism. Perhaps you’re a reporter with a passion for design. Or you’re a cartographer who would like to put environment stories on the map. If you can see your talents helping The Narwhal tell visual stories about the natural world in Canada, we want to hear from you! We understand that a career in the arts is often a winding path (just ask our creative director). If you wonder whether you’re the right fit for this fellowship or have questions before you fill out the application, email us at hiring@thenarwhal.ca.
