Call for Artists
The Mount Pleasant Community Association (MPCA) is seeking proposals from Calgary-based professional and student artists to create a temporary work of public art in Horsy Park, located at 5th St and 29th Ave NW.
The proposed work of art should meet two key criteria: (1) it must attract people to the park, and (2) it must foster dialogue about re-use and sustainability by using low-impact materials, such as scraps from other projects, reclaimed materials, or items salvaged from nature (e.g. fallen branches, leaves). If the work is made of ephemeral materials, it must be designed so that it exists for at least 2 weeks before deteriorating naturally.
Proposals should also take into account the work’s public location and context. All works must be safe for public exhibition. Applicants are encouraged to visit the park in person to understand the space.
Entries will be judged by a volunteer jury consisting of an MPCA Board Member, two artists, and two members of the community. The jury will review proposals for safety, choice of materials, relationship of the work to the space, conceptual strength, artist’s ability to carry out the work, and aesthetic appeal.
The successful artist will be paid $2500 for the creation of the work. This amount includes the artist fee, materials, set-up and take down of the work, and any other costs associated with the creation and removal of the work.
Interested artists should submit the following items as a single PDF to grants@mpca.ca:
• A current CV
• A brief statement (300 words) describing the work, its materials, and how it will engage the community in dialogues about sustainability
• Drawings or images of the proposed work
• A rough budget to support proposal feasibility
Deadline for proposals is April 1, 2021 at 11:59 pm.
The successful artist will be notified by April 9, 2021.
The project must be in place by April 22, 2021.
We thank all applicants for their proposals. Only the successful applicant will be notified.
