Early-career Artists: An Open Call for Submissions for the Future of Art in Alberta

Closing Date of Opportunity: October 23, 2023

Name or Organization: Art Gallery of Alberta

Contact Email: curatorial@youraga.ca.

Post Content: 2024 is the Art Gallery of Alberta’s 100th anniversary and we are thinking about the future and what comes next.

We are seeking submissions from or nominations of early-career Albertan artists for inclusion in an exhibition in the Fall of 2024 that coincides with the 100th anniversary. This exhibition will be in conjunction with other programming that looks both to the past and to the future.

The goal of this open call to early-career artists is to create an exhibition that considers the future of art in Alberta and the traditional territories that intersect that colonial provincial border. This could include, but is not limited to, future-focused themes like various futurisms (Indigenous Futurism, Afro-Futurism, etc.), sci-fi, utopia or dystopia, apocalypse, fortune-telling, astrology, divining, or dreaming/visioning.

A jury of artists and arts workers will select a shortlist of artists. The curatorial team of the AGA will curate this exhibition from that shortlist. The final exhibition will include 10-20 artists. All exhibiting artists will receive a fee in accordance with CARFAC for their participation in the exhibition.

Who: This call is open to early career individual artists or artist collectives in Alberta or Treaties 4, 6, 7, 8, 10.

How: Respond to the call by uploading the following:

  1. Bio – A half-page written document OR a 2-minute video OR a 2-minute audio file introducing yourself or the artist you are nominating and briefly outlining what you think is your most important past experience, education, and qualifications.

  2. CV – A point form list of past exhibitions, educational and/or other artistic experience, awards received, etc.

  3. Artist Statement – A half page written document OR a 2-minute video OR a 2-minute audio file describing the conceptual or thematic focus of your artwork or the artwork of the artist you are nominating.

  4. Up to 10 images of artworks.

When: Please submit before 5pm on October 23, 2023.
