Post Content: The Community Mentorship & Studio Residency at Village Commons is a program offered by the Calgary Allied Arts Foundation (CAAF) and carya.

CAAF’s aim is to support emerging artists to reach their full potential. Our residencies enable emerging artists to further explore their creative practice and to take advantage of opportunities that CAAF can provide.

carya supports individuals and families through counselling, education, community development and more. They have been dedicated to creating strong families and communities for generations.

This residency program was developed to offer studio space and teaching opportunities to emerging artists in 3 month durations. Throughout their residency artists will be required to teach at least 2 one-hour workshops and/or host open studio hours per week.

Selected artists will use the studio to work on their proposed project, and to prepare for and host workshops. Workshops will be registered programs for up to 14 people and will focus on working with participants to provide them with new skills, or the opportunity to strengthen existing skillsets. Workshops must be accessible to folks of a variety of ages, skill-sets and abilities.

Residencies are offered in 3 month durations with a stipend of up to $800 per month, depending on the number of workshops provided; additionally, up to $100 per month is available for workshop supplies. We are unable to provide additional funding or assistance for travel or accommodations to out of town artists.

Applications will be reviewed by an impartial committee, who will base their selections on the overall quality of each application. Artist submissions will be evaluated on the project proposal, proposed workshops, artistic merit, and quality of past work.

All artists selected for the Community Mentorship & Studio Residency are expected to undertake this opportunity professionally, respecting the studio space and their neighbours while acting as representatives of carya and CAAF. All successful artists will be required to complete a Police Information Check including a vulnerable sector check.

The studio is located in carya’s community hub, Village Commons in Calgary’s East Village. Village Commons is a multigenerational space that offers a diversity of opportunities, including free and fun recreational based programming and community engagement across the lifespan.
